Josh was likely killed. His teeth (presumably) covered in blood are found bundled in the sticks. I thought the implication was that he was killed, or at least tortured. I also think that his calls for help were purely the witch mimicking his voice, as she was more explicitly demonstrated to have the ability to do so in Blair Witch 2016.

I'd also recommend Curse of the Blair Witch. It's a fake documentary that aired on Sci-Fi back when the movie was coming out. It's very well done, and goes into much more detail about the story of the Blair Witch, and Blair Witch lore, than the movie does. It adds a lot more significance to stuff that happens in the movie. Ellis accepts his demons but doesn't let them take over. You’ll need to do the following in order to get the Break The Cycle ending in Blair Witch: Do not leave Bullet behind in the final chapter Do not pick up any of the carved figurines you find except the three in the final chapters, you need those to progress. During the last chapter, do not follow the witch’s orders. This means not Heather being stuck in a time loop would tie into how we see her in Blair Witch 2016. I like to theorize that she never actually died and is basically stuck in the house under the witches control. The Witch had already gotten into her head prior to the group going into the woods.
